Summer movies always tend to get the biggest hype and this year's are no exception. With a mix of everything, the summer of 2008 is shaping up to be quite a movie fest.
Iron Man (May 2)Marvel comic book adaptations have certainly faired well over the years and this summer’s Iron Man will only add to the ever-growing franchise. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Tony Stark, a wealthy weapons designer who is kidnapped, while visiting a war-torn country and forced to construct a weapon of mass destruction. While in captivity, he builds a supped-up armored suit and escapes. These events shift Stark’s priorities and he decides to defend the world from criminals. Iron Man also stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow. Speed Racer (May 9)Based on the classic anime TV series, Speed Racer is expected to deliver quite a visual spectacle. The Wachowski brothers (creators of The Matrix trilogy) team up once again with a story about a boy who was born to race cars. Speed (Emile Hirsch) feels compelled to live out his brother’s legacy, who was killed during a race. When he receives an offer to race for Royalton Industries, instead of he family’s racing business, Speed declines and ends up creating an enemy who holds a grudge against the racer and his Mach 5 car. When his family’s business is threatened by the wealthy and manipulative magnate, Speed decides to take part in the very race that claimed his brother’s life. Speed Racer also stars John Goodman, Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox and Susan Sarandon. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (May 22)It’s been 27 years since we first set eyes on the charismatic Dr. Jones (Harrison Ford) in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The cinematic duo of George Lucas and Steven Speilberg are teaming up once again to bring Indiana Jones back to the big screen. Set in 1957, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has the beloved archaeologist searching the South American jungles for a crystal skull. Believed to hold great power, the true nature of the crystal skull has been speculated by many. As always, what Indiana Jones film would be complete without a gang of villains? This time Soviet spy, Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) is hot on Indy’s trail and after the same artifact. While it’s been confirmed that Indiana’s father, played by Sean Connery, will not be making an appearance, Shia LeBeouf has signed on as Mutt Williams, Indiana’s sidekick. The fourth installment also stars Karen Allen, John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Jim Broadbent. Sex and the City (May 30)Dust off the Manolo’s and break out the Cosmos, Carrie Bradshaw is back! Sarah Jessica Parker returns to her role as the quirky relationship and sex columnist, as the hit TV show lands on the big screen. Where would Carrie be without her three best friends? Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis also reprise their roles in the upcoming film. While not a lot is known regarding the plot, we do know that Carrie and "Big" are engaged and that Charlotte is pregnant. The girls are a little older, perhaps a little wiser and without a doubt, a little more fabulous! Sex and the City also stars Chris Noth, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Lewis, Willie Garson and Mario Cantone. Wanted (June 27)What happens when a time clock punching, 9-5 slacker meets a deadly enforcer? He becomes an unstoppable force of nature. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) lives a very monotonous life, but all that changes when he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), a pernicious assassin and is introduced to a secret society of trained vigilantes, known as the Fraternity. When his absentee father is murdered, Wesley strives to requite his death with the assistance of the Fraternity. However, he soon discovers that there is an even greater power behind this group of deadly assassins. Based on the graphic novel by Mark Miller, Wanted also stars Morgan Freeman and Terence Stamp. The Dark Knight (July 18)The caped crusader is back in this new installment of the Batman series. The continuation to 2005's Batman Begins, finds Batman (Christian Bale) still trying to rid the city of Gotham of crime. His efforts appear to be useless when Gotham City falls victim to a maniacal villain who calls himself The Joker (Heath Ledger). Michael Caine returns to his role as Alfred Pennyworth, Morgan Freeman continues as Lucius Fox and Gary Oldman is back as Lieutenant James Gordon. Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes and Aaron Eckhart joins the cast as District Attorney Harvey Dent.
