Project Breakout

Online Filmmaking Competition and Social Networking

Sep 2, 2008 Whitney Moore

Project Breakout is the internet's first social networking film competition site promising big entertainment combined with big success for its participants.

Not only is Project Breakout the latest in a long line of social networking media sites but it is the first to focus on giving its participants their big break while holding competitions focusing on certain areas of interest to the film-going public.

The latest competition is the Master of the Macabre Short Film Competition which gave independent filmmakers the chance to show off their skills a la` Alfred Hitchcock by submitting their scariest short films which were then voted on weekly by visitors to the site. Those that made it into the final round now have several weeks in which to put together an all new film to show for the final competition beginning

September 22, 2008.

Project Breakout's Beginnings

Project Breakout was started by Gregory Sukornyk in 2006 and has since provided some high profile talent to the film industry since. Past competitors of the community have gone on to work with Oscar Award Winners like David Parfitt and have even been given the assignment of covering the Democratic and Republican National Conventions on behalf of the site.

“We are thrilled that Project Breakout is continuing to help budding talent and look forward to giving more people a leg up by offering them real career-advancing opportunities,” says founder Gregory Sukornyk in a press release sent out in March 2008 for the inaugural film competition.

Project Breakout’s primary focus is on the film industry but it also has categories for Broadcasting, Music and Fitness which all have their own competitions associated with them. Each section also functions as its own starting page so users can log into whatever section they want right away instead of having to go to the main page every time.

Project Breakout's Relationship to the Entertainment Industry

In a 2008 interview on the site’s Music section DJ Irie sums up the focus of the site by saying “Before [Project Breakout] it was a business model and a style and the labels being everything… Now with the web everyone’s in A&R…it’s a level playing field so when you have a site like Project Breakout it really gathers all this great talent together and really showcases it. It’s a really great site for the industry and for everyone involved.”

The system of competing and winning by community votes and viral video is intended to make this site the combination of YouTube and American Idol and it is what the site’s founders hope will make it unique as well as beneficial to the independent filmmaking community at large.
