Alternatives to Satellite TV

Viewing Television without a TV

Aug 3, 2009 Francine Brokaw

In this day of skyrocketing technology, people are not confined to the lounge chair to watch their favorite TV shows.

The Internet is a fast-growing place on which to view television. Not only do many of the networks post their shows online, but episodes can be found in some not-so-obscure places such as YouTube.

Computers Can Be Used for TV Viewing

Computers are also another way to view television. There are simple connections for turning a computer into a television screen. And, there are several software/hardware packages that easily make TV viewing on a computer as easy as one-two-three. For instance, Pinnacle’s PCTV HD Pro Stick is a small unit that plugs into a USB port and turns it into a television with “ultra-sensitive reception.” It is one alternative to a regular television set. All that’s needed is a PC or laptop with a large hard drive if you want to record, time-shift (pause, repeat, etc), a DVD or CD drive, as well as a spare USB port.

Small Portable Devices Can Be Used for TV Viewing

Television reception is also available on some cell phones. Mobile TV is now cellular. In today’s world people can make a phone call, receive and send email, check the stock market, text, get the news, and watch TV all on one small device.

And something that is starting to make its way into the general public is the TV Wrist Watch. It is more prevalent in Japan at the moment, but in time it will be available everywhere.

There are so many ways the public can view TV these days, it is a wonder why the LCD and plasma big screens are selling so well. This society is strange. The televisions are getting bigger, but everything else is getting smaller. Yet, more people are turning to their smaller devices to watch TV than ever before.

Large TVs and Small Devices

The ophthalmologists of the future will be the professionals who will determine if watching TV on tiny objects ultimately is bad for eyes. Going back and forth from a large 50 inch screen to a three inch screen might be difficult for human eyes. But in the meantime, people are watching TV on all kinds of screens.

Whether it is a PC, laptop, iphone, palm pilot, blackberry, wrist watch, or whatever new gadget that is on the horizon, technology has created countless alternatives to satellite TV.

And for people who are not interested in getting all the satellite programming, they can attach an antennae and digital converter box to their television sets for old-fashioned viewing. Of course, there won’t be My Three Sons, The Brady Bunch, or Bonanza.

There is one more alternative to satellite TV. That is not watching TV at all.
