Variety is reporting that Troy Duffy is returning to direct from his own script a sequel to his 1999 cult-favorite action flick "The Boondock Saints."

The sequel, entitled Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, sees Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus return as brothers Connor and Murphy McManus, two Irish-Catholic vigilantes from Boston that target Mafioso's on a personal crusade for justice.

Billy Connolly, David Della Rocco, and Bob Marley will return as well, with Clifton Collins Jr. (Capote, Babel) and Julie Benz (TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Dexter) rounding out the cast. Sadly, it does not appear likely that Willem Dafoe will return as the flamboyantly hilarious FBI agent Paul Smecker, though Benz is slated to play a character named Eunice, who is a protégé of Smecker's.

Production Begins Years After Boondock Saint's Troubled Release

The sequel has begun shooting in Toronto over eight years after the original's release, when Miramax gave it an extremely limited run of only 5 theaters. The original was eventually re-released several months later, but the movie did not find life until DVD, when Blockbuster Video named it a "Blockbuster Exclusive." From there, word of mouth grew and it quickly became a cult favorite, its impressive sales and rentals leading to an unrated collector's edition of the DVD being released in 2006.

The sequel has been in development for many years now, with Duffy even posting a letter to fans in 2002 stating that financial backing had been found. The official site had listed a release date in September of 2005, but nothing ever came to be. Duffy later explained in an IGN interview that there were still legal issues in regards to the company that holds the rights to the original film.

However, it appears the litigation behind the property has now been resolved and, due in large part to the success of DVD sales, shooting is now underway. A production diary is available on their MySpace page, with behind-the-scenes interviews and even calls for extras.

Overnight Documentary Chronicles Duffy's Rise - and Fall - In Hollywood

The 2003 documentary Overnight examines Duffy's trials and tribulations in getting the film made, and highlighted much of the meteoric rise-and-fall of Duffy's stock in Hollywood. The documentary painted an arguably biased picture of an ambitious but truculent filmmaker that alienated friends and earned the ire of Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein. Duffy himself has condemned the documentary, though admitting in the IGN interview that he had not seen it.

There is currently no release date set for All Saints Day. Details about the plot are still unclear, though the film is supposed to take place 10 years after the original.
