Three years after premiering on Showtime, Dexter has several merchandising tie-ins and the fourth book in the series as show gains popularity.
The fourth season of Dexter starts Sept. 27 on Showtime and Miami’s most complex serial killer is now a married man. Dexter is Officially a Family ManSeason three ended with Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) wedding his longtime girlfriend, Rita (Julie Benz). While Dexter doesn’t feel emotions the way normal people do, he is usually masterful at imitating them, but he was at a loss when trying to propose to Rita following the knowledge she was pregnant. It was only after he saw a witness put on a phony display of love in an interrogation room, Dexter was able to know exactly how he could convince Rita his proposal was sincere and not just a shotgun approach to their situation. A sneak peek at season four, which is available at showtime.com shows the blood spatter analyst balancing his family, career and unusual hobby. The pressure is definitely getting to him because while on the stand at a trial, Dexter misstates the name of the defendant. Details were not foggy in Dexter’s mind in season 1, in which he recalled on the stand with exact precision the number of cases he’s worked on. Another Menace Threatens the ‘Dark Defender’Facing previous killers in the past one might think Dexter could have some time without getting so close to someone like him, but John Lithgow guest stars this season as a murderer known as the Trinity Killer, a moniker given to him because of his proclivity to kill in threes. The name was given to him by special agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine) who returns after tracking the Bay Harbor Butcher in season 2. While closing in on his man the last time he was in Florida, Lundy found time to romance Dexter’s sister, Deborah (Jennifer Carpenter). Deborah almost followed Lundy to his next case in Oregon, but an emergency arose and their fling came to an abrupt end. Anticipation for the upcoming season is high and video from a panel with the cast and crew from the Comic-Con convention is available is available on showtime.com. Merchandising tie-ins for Dexter include bobbleheads, action figures, mugs, shirts, wall calendar, and even coasters. The coasters are meant to look like glass slides with Dexter’s favorite souvenir splattered on them and come in a wooden box similar to the one Dexter keeps in his air conditioner. Dexter is based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. Before the start of the new season, the fourth book in the series, Dexter by Design is released in bookstores Sept. 8, so fans who can’t wait for the season to start have something to tide them over.
