Is the much-gossiped about Sex and the City film finally coming together? Since the show ended its run in 2004 after six seasons on the cable channel HBO, there’s been back-and-forth speculation regarding a movie version of the hit television series.
First, it was a go. Then there were stories that only three of the four actresses were really on board (supposedly Kim Cattrall was the one who didn’t want to reprise her SATC character, sexually adventurous Samantha Jones). Then there were denials of any riffs, followed by “scheduling difficulties” and the rest of the run-of-the-mill excuses. The ultimate conclusion was that the film was never going to happen.
But earlier this year, the tide again turned. Sources such as ExtraTV.com began reporting that the film was in pre-production. Though negotiations are still reportedly being worked out, a recent issue of the magazine LA Confidential, which has a short article featuring Willie Garson, who played Carrie’s best pal Stanford, confirms that filming could begin as soon as mid-September.
Michael Patrick King will direct the film. This marks his directorial debut. King was executive producer on the television series, and he wrote and directed numerous episodes.
When viewers last saw Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and the gals, they each made important decisions regarding their futures. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and husband Harry finally became parents – they saw a photograph of the baby girl that they’re set to adopt from China. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), living with husband Steve and their son Brady, offered to allow Steve’s mother to stay with them. Samantha found true with Smith, who stood by her through her breast cancer. And Carrie got together with Big – officially. Viewers also learned Big’s real name, as it appeared on Carrie’s cell phone (John, for those who missed it.)
Thus far, details regarding any story lines in the film have been hard to come by. Also publicly unknown is how much time will have lapsed onscreen between the end of the series and the beginning of the film.
Known: Mario Cantone, who played Charlotte’s wedding coordinator-turned-friend, is “promised” a large role in the film.
Will everyone who dedicated their Sunday nights to Sex and the City rush to the theaters? Between the season finale in 2004 and now, the show has even gained a new following of viewers who watched the (extremely edited) reruns on TV or rented the DVDs. Time will tell – 2008’s a great year for cosmopolitans and shoes…
Update: Chris Noth signed on to reprise his role of Big. Filming officially began September in NYC. EXTRA and Access Hollywood have already shown footage of the filming, including a pregnant Charlotte.
