It's been reported that British actor Thomas Sangster has already landed the title role in Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's big screen "Tintin" movie.

With production moving forward on the much-anticipated “Tintin” movie, it has been reported that the main role may have already been landed by a young British actor called Thomas Sangster. News of a release date has already emerged in March 2008 (as reported on this site), and vague details of what to expect have come from the only confirmed cast member, actor Andy Serkis. However, British newspaper The Daily Mail* has reported that Sangster has already tested with the motion capture technology being used to make the film (similar to that used by Serkis in the "Lord of The Rings" movies), and has landed the part in the lucrative franchise. It should be stressed that no official announcement has been made, but the paper reports that the actor’s representation has declined to comment.

Thomas, Actually

The name may not be immediately familiar, however there’s a big chance you would have seen some of Sangster’s work. He appeared as Liam Neeson’s loverlorn son in the smash hit “Love, Actually”, and acted opposite his co-stars in that film, Emma Thompson and Colin Firth, in children’s movie “Nanny McPhee”. British audiences may recognise him as a schoolboy in TV series “Doctor Who”, appearing in the episodes “Family of Blood” and “Human Nature”.

A slightly more controversial role early in his career was playing the 10 year-old Adolf Hitler in the Emmy Award-winning “Hitler: The Rise of Evil”. Turning 18 in May, he is fast approaching the right age for the part, and his experience would certainly suggest he can shoulder the responsibility of such a huge task.

Ship Ahoy for Tintin?

The same article, lamenting the secrecy behind the project, also mentions a rumour surrounding the involvement of “Titanic” director James Cameron in the series of films. It’s believed Spielberg will direct the first, and Jackson the second, however Cameron’s name being mentioned suggests he may be the ‘guest director’ for the third part. Such a move would combine three of Hollywood’s most successful directors of all time, making several Billion dollars in Box Office receipts between them.

Fans of Herge’s globetrotting investigator will be on the edge of their seats, hoping to hear some confirmation of these sensational rumours. As for Sangster, being cast in the part could propel his star status to that of another British franchise star, “Harry Potter” actor Daniel Radcliffe. Whether or not this project repeats those heights, only time will tell.
