Spring 2009 Movie Preview Guide

From Hannah to Terminator: What New Movies will Dominate this Spring

Mar 31, 2009 Paul Counelis

Spring always brings a groundswell of potential blockbuster films, and this spring is no different. A look at the most anticipated films of the season.

2009 brings us a new take on some old favorites, more superhero films, favorite celebrities, and maybe even an Oscar worthy film or two (or not). Big name directors with big name projects, as well as a couple of picks for what may turn out to be surprise money makers. Remakes, re-imaginings, sequels, and prequels; spring 2009 has it all. Here's a closer look at some of this year's box office contenders.

  • APRIL

Fast and Furious - Vin Diesel returns to the Fast/Furious canon with a turbocharged sequel that drops the "thes" from the title but keeps the action, well, fast...and presumably, furious. April 3rd

Hannah Montana: The Movie - Everyone's favorite teen sensation makes her big screen acting debut (apart from a small role in Tim Burton's Big Fish - trivia) in this Disney prepubescent blockbuster. April 10th

  • MAY

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Envisioned as a prequel series to the X-films (presumably Magneto and others will also get their own movies), this offering of "Origins" brings the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolvie. Ryan Reynolds also co-stars in an inspired piece of casting as wisecracking Deadpool, the "Merc with a mouth". Coinciding with "Free Comic Book Day". May 1st

Star Trek - This highly anticipated big budget re-imagining flies into theaters courtesy of J.J. Abrams. Early screenings of the film have been very positive. Fanboys of the world, rejoice! May 8th

Angels and Demons - The sequel to Ron Howard's "The Da Vinci Code" has Tom Hanks back on the case - with better hair this time - and on the trail of a secret society with sinister plans. Could be big box office...but maybe not. A spring wildcard. May 15th

Terminator Salvation - Christian Bale gets another crack at an iconic blockbuster role, this time flanked by Helena Bonham Carter and Sam Worthington. Riding a wave of "Dark Knight" popularity, this could be a huge hit, and Bale could be an even bigger star. If that's even possible. May 21st

Night at the Museum 2: Battle at the Smithsonian - Another sequel, this time to Ben Stiller's family hit. Stiller is once again part of the shenanigans, as is much of the original cast including Owen Wilson. Newcomer and SNL alum Bill Hader joins in on the fun. May 22nd

Up - Disney/Pixar attempts to continue it's unparalleled run of successful and appealing family films with this follow-up to last year's phenomenal masterwork "WALL-E". Given Pixar's track record and their ability to appeal to kids and adults alike, look for this movie to elevate the Spring movie season, and probably continue Pixar's hold on Oscar nominations. May 29th

And hey, that's only spring! Summer has even more potential blockbusters and wondrous cinematic sights to behold...!
