Heath Ledger, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ben Stiller, Don Cheadle, and Bill Maher added star power to this year's best movies.

It’s always a struggle to determine the favorite movie selections for any year because there are so many contenders and so many previously hyped films that end as disappointments. For example, the mediocre Made of Honor was billed as the big romantic movie event of the year with some theaters even hosting bridesmaid’s dress competitions for cash prizes. Thankfully, some films actually lived up to our expectations. Some even exceeded them. So without further ado, these top picks for the best movies of 2008 represent movies that provided pleasant surprises for audiences in terms of fresh storylines, masterful performances, original writing, and big laughs.

Yuen Kit Mun :
I vote

- Hancock (Peter Berg). Good take on the superhero genre. The scene where Hancock throws himself out of the hospital window is powerful.

- Wanted (Timur Bekmambetov). Imaginative special effects and car stunts gives a strange surreal believability to the premise. Not to mention the scene where Angelina Jolie's characters realises what she needs to do.

- Sky Crawlers (Mamoru Oshii). Indescribable. Serious animation at its best.
