The Film Releases of October 2008Body of Lies, Pride and Glory, W., Flash of Genius, RocknRollaIn October, movie screens will be graced by stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Edward Norton and Colin Farrell, plus a new film from Guy Ritchie
Flash of Genius (October 3rd - starring Greg Kinnear; directed by Marc Abraham): this true story follows the life of Robert Kearns (Kinnear), a college professor and inventor who thinks he and his family have struck it rich after his 1960s invention of a device that would eventually be used in every automobile in the world - the intermittent windshield wiper. But he's quickly forgotten about by the same U.S. auto giants who had so embraced his invention and spends years fighting the industry in a modern-day David vs. Goliath battle in order to earn the credit he is due.
Body of Lies (October 10th - starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe; directed by Ridley Scott): DiCaprio stars as Roger Ferris, a CIA operative on the trail of an emerging terrorist leader in Jordan, while Crowe plays CIA veteran Ed Hoffman, a manipulative man who commands Ferris' every move via a secure phone line, and a man that serves as his only lifeline. To get closer to his target, Ferris finds himself delving deeper into the terrorist leader's dangerous world and forming an uneasy alliance with the head of Jordan's covert operations. The film is based on the novel "Penetration" by former Washington Post columnist David Ignatius.
W.(October 17th - starring Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Banks; directed by Oliver Stone): Stone continues his biopic trend (The Doors, JFK, Nixon) with this film about the life and presidency of George W. Bush. It traces the history of Bush from his younger, somewhat troubled years to his eventual election as 43rd president of the U.S., and explores his controversial decision to invade Iraq. Brolin stars as W. while Banks plays First Lady Laura Bush.
Pride and Glory(October 24th - starring Edward Norton and Colin Farrell; directed by Gavin O'Connor): this film centers on a multi-generational family of New York City Police officers who are put at odds when Ray Tierney (Norton) uncovers a police corruption scandal that involves his own brother-in-law, Jimmy Egan (Farrell). The truth will not only threaten the family's legacy but it could also undo the entire NYPD. Jon Voight stars in the film as the elder of the Tierney family.
RocknRolla (October 31st - starring Gerard Butler and Tom Wilkinson; directed by Guy Ritchie): when a crooked real estate deal puts millions of dollars up for grabs, all of London's criminal underbelly comes out of the woodwork to stake their claim to the loot. No criminal is unrepresented in the chase for the quick cash as a dangerous crime lord, a corrupt politician, a drug-addled rock star, and a sexy accountant all fix their eyes on the prize. Ritchie looks to return to form after 2002's Madonna disaster Swept Away as his new project is garnering a lot of buzz, especially after its screening at last month's Toronto International Film Festival.
