Best TV Comedies Of All Time

Counting Down The Shows That Really Made You Laugh

Mar 14, 2009 Frank Leal

This is the continuation of the top ten list of the greatest TV comedies of all time.

WIthout further adieu, the top five comedies of all time are:

5. The Simpsons

The Simpsons has had an amazing twenty year run. It follows the lives of the residents of Sprinfield, USA. It stars the Simpsons family. Homer is the intellectually challenged and hilarious patriarch of the family. Marge is the level-headed mom. Bart is very funny as the mischievous and underachieving son. Lisa is the bright and responsible daughter. Maggie is the baby. The great thing about cartoons is that even after twenty years, the characters can all remain the same age. The wacky exploits of the Simpsons lead to great comedy. They have many fun adverntures in the city of Springfield. The writing is very clever and the storylines are very creative. The Simpsons is arguably the most successful cartoon of all time.

4. Married with Children

For eleven seasons, this family put the "fun" in dysfunctional. Ed O'Neill stars as Al Bundy, a shoe salesman who hates his life. His wife Peggy is very lazy. She doesn't cook, clean or do anything for him. His kids don't respect him. Kelly is the typical "dumb blond." Bud is the typical lonely boy, who can't get a date. Al and Peg poking fun of each other is great comedy. They have great chemistry. The neighbors also add to the comedy of the show. Some of the shows great comedy comes from Al and neighbor Marcy hurling insults at each other. Some of the jokes on this show are very risque and they are guaranteed to make you laugh. Al has many faults but deep down he is not a bad guy. Yet, for some reason nothing ever seems to go his way. He is a very sympathetic figure. He is a frustrated ex-athlete who is constantly reliving his glory days of high school football, the highlight of his life. It was all downhill for Al after that.

3. Mister Ed

Mister Ed was one of the great shows of the 60s. It stars Bamboo Harvester as Mister Ed, a horse who has the unique ability to speak. The catch is that he only speaks to one man, an architect named Wilbur. Mister Ed is often dismissed as a silly kids show, but nothing could be furter from the truth. Mister Ed was actually a sophisticated comedy with very creative storylines. You'll be amazed at the things this brilliant horse was capable of doing. Ed found himself in some very wacky and very funny predicaments. The horse was a great actor and as weird as this may sound, he had great chemistry with Wilbur. WIlbur often played the straight-man to Ed but he could also be very funny at times, and he was a great physical comedian. Ed was very mischievous and created a lot of trouble for WIlbur, but in the end WIlbur always forgave him. They truly cared for each other and that was the strength of the show.

2. I Love Lucy

This was perhaps the first great comedy. It stars Lucille Ball as Lucy Ricardo, a housewife who yearns to get into show business and perform at her husband's club. Ball is regarded as perhaps the greatest comedienne of all time. She has impeccable comedic timing and was great doing physical comedy. She was a rarity, a beautiful woman who did a great job acting silly and being very funny. She had great chemistry with real-life husband Desi who played Ricky. Even though he would often get mad at her, he always forgave her because they truly loved each other. Lucy got herself into some very wild predicaments along with her partner-in-crime Ethel. These wacky situations made for great comedy. Fred was also very funny as Ethel's husband and the Ricardo's landlord. This show may be over fifty years old but it is a timeless classic.

And finally, the number one comedy of all time is:

1. Three's Company

If you don't like this show, then you either have no sense of humor, or you don't have a pulse. Three's Company was quite simply the funniest show ever. John Ritter stars as an aspiring chef who lives with two beautiful girls. John was clearly the star of the show. He had impeccable comedic timing and was one of the great physical comedians of all time. Suzanne Somers co-stars as the "dumb blond" Chrissy and Joyce Dewitt co-stars as the level-headed Janet. All three have great chemistry together and that is the strength of the show. Norman Fell and Audra Lindley are the Ropers, the landlords who don't get intimate any more. They seem to have been the inspiration for the Bundys. In order for Mr. Roper to allow Jack to live with two girls they convince him that Jack is gay.

This premise leads to great comedic situations including Mr. Roper's "gay jokes" toward "tinkerbell" Jack. Mr. Roper was very funny and he had sort of a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. Mr. Roper and Jack also had great chemistry. When the Ropers spun off, Don Knotts was brought in as Mr. Furley, the new resident landlord. The show did not miss a beat. He was hilarious and a great physical comedian. Some of his facail expressions were absolutely priceless. When Suzanne Somers was fired due to a contract dispute, she was replaced by Jenilee Harrison who was very funny in her short-lilved role as the clutzy Cindy. She was replaced by Priscilla Barnes who was very funny as a wacky nurse named Teri. Then there's Larry, played by Richard Kline. He was priceless as everyone's favorite swinging bachelor and Jack's partner-in-crime. He and Jack also had great chemistry. He would often get Jack into trouble leading to some hilarious predicaments. One of the few shows that is laugh-out-loud funny. This show was the master of the comedic misunderstanding and it was risque comedy at its finest.

Well, there's the list. These ten shows are guaranteed to make you laugh and are required viewing for any fan of great TV comedies.

how do you not have MASH on here? Seriously! The character interactions were hilarious over its 11 seasons, yet it did not hid the horrors of war, but rather showed how the human spirit survives the nightmares thru humor. I would place it at number one (and statistically, its final episode still hold the record for largest audienc of a primetime episode) but it definitely should be in any humor top 10.

You can make a good case for MASH but I limited the list to shows I am familiar with and watched often. I never really watched MASH.
